1. Is NeuroStar TMS Therapy® safe?
Yes, NeuroStar TMS Therapy® is FDA approved, by perscription only and is considered an outpatient procedure.
2. TMS is also being studied and used "off-label” for...
Fibromyalgia
Cocaine Addiction
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Autism
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Bipolar Disorder
3. Are there side effects?
NeuroStar TMS Therapy® has a very favorable side effect profile and is free of any negative side effects typically experienced with antidepressant medications. The most common side effect associated with treatment is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment area - generally mild to moderate.
4. Pregnancy and TMS
The research that has been conducted shows that NeuroStar TMS Therapy® is a safer option for treating depression for women, who are expecting, than some antidepressant medications. "As no sedation or analgesia is required, TMS offers a potent CNS active treatment without exposing the fetus to the effects of drugs that cross the placenta.” (Tjoa, Pare & Kim, 2010) "In all cases which have been reported in the literature, maternal depression improved. Although these are case reports only, these reports suggest that TMS may be a viable option for depression during pregnancy both as a primary treatment and as an adjunctive treatment.”
(Tjoa, Pare & Kim, 2010) Reference: Tjoa, C., Pare, E., & Kim, D. (2010). Unipolar Depression During Pregnancy: Nonpharmalogic Treatment Options. Womens Health 6(4), p565-576.
5. Who should not have NeuroStar TMS Therapy® treatments?
The Neurostar TMS Therapy® system is contraindicated for use in patients who have metallic objects (conductive, ferromagnetic, or other magnetic sensitive metals) on or near the head, within 30cm of the treatment coil. Examples include: cochlear implants, implanted electrodes/stimulators, aneurysm clips or coils, stents, bullet fragments, jewelry, and hair barrettes. (Note: dental fillings, braces etc. are generally fine.)
